9 Natural Remedies For Treating a Fever

Did you know that fever is a healthy sign that your body is fighting some infection? Fever is a symptom and not an illness so whenever you or your baby has a fever know that it’s signalling some infection. Try and find the root cause of a fever. For example if your child has a fever it could be due to ear infection, food poisoning or other viral or bacterial infection. Suppressing a fever is like suppressing your immunity. Fever usually runs a course of 3-5 days so the best idea is to let it run it’s course and use homeopathic remedies instead. Homeopathic remedies will not suppress your fever but will stimulate your natural immunity so a fever comes down naturally. This way you are treating a root cause rather than just the symptom. Homeopathy is the most effective way to reduce a sudden, high fever. Homeopathy doesn’t suppress your fever, but it heals the root cause of infection, so the fever comes down naturally.

Fever is beneficial for your body, and it will help you fight infection and heal quickly. Fever alone will never cause a febrile seizure, but a combination of other factors, like sudden rise and sudden drop in temperature causes a febrile seizure. I never treat a fever unless it’s really high and is causing obvious discomforts.

I don’t recommend taking Tylenol/Paracetamol because long term use has been been associated with liver damage.  Tylenol only suppresses a fever for a short duration and does nothing to address the root cause. The toxic overload is too much for the liver to process. Conventional drugs are NEVER without a side effect even if it says so on the box/leaflet.

Here are some of my favorite methods to lower a fever naturally, not suppressing them, but healing them by drawing out virus and bacteria.

This Chapter is from my New eBook Citrine’s Holistic Flu Remedies.

Onion Socks:

Onion works like magic in preventing and treating various illnesses, especially viral infections (it has antibacterial properties, too). Onion has been used in Ayurveda to treat coughs, colds, flus, heart disease, diabetes (heart disease and diabetes have nothing to do with virus or bacteria, but onion has been used to treat those, too) insect bites, and other viral diseases for thousands of years. Onion has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties, so when you cut an onion, its aroma spreads throughout the room, and that’s when it works. You inhale all its goodness, which helps boost your immunity naturally.

Onion Socks for a fever: Are you laughing out loud? Some friends of mine surely did when I first told them about this trick, and now, they are in love with their onion socks. No, you don’t have to roam in onion socks feeling conscious of how you smell. You wear it only when you come in contact with someone with the flu or you feel you are just about to come down with the flu. You know that fluish feeling, scratchy throat, burning eyes, the feeling that says something is not working in my body correctly. I need to fix it up soon. Yes, that’s when you take out your lovely pair of socks (even an ugly old pair will do) and stuff it up with thin onion slices and go to bed. You will be amazed to see what it does. If you are having trouble with that non-stop stubborn cough or burning eyes, it will be gone in a few hours. You will have a restful night and that proud feeling when you wake up, because you kicked the flu’s butt using no toxins. This is the best remedy for babies and children. You will notice how their congestion improves overnight, and they sleep peacefully through the night.

Peppermint and Lemon Footbath

Peppermint essential oils should never be used on children younger than 6 years, but dried peppermint is safe for small children. This remedy is for babies 6 months and up.

1 Tbsp. Dried or fresh Peppermint leaves

Juice of 1 Lemon

A bowl of room temperature water for a footbath

A cup of hot water

Pour a cup of hot water into dried peppermint and let it infuse for 15-20 minutes. Strain or you can even put the water with infused herbs in a bowl of room temperature water. Add fresh lemon juice. Let your child dip his feet and soak in it for 15-20 minutes. Peppermint and Lemon both have antipyretic properties, which means both have fever reducing properties. Do this every 3-4 hours to draw out all the toxins and reduce a fever naturally.

For children above 6 years and adults, you can put 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil, instead of the herb in your footbath.

Egg White Socks

This is a very effective remedy to reduce a fever. It’s a little messy but it rarely fails.

Always use organic or free range eggs for this recipe.

3 Egg whites

A pair of thin cotton socks

A pair of thick cotton socks

Soak the first pair of thin cotton soaks in three egg whites. Put the socks on; if it is for your child, then they might cry about it, but you can always put it on once they are asleep. Now, put on the second layer of thick socks. Egg whites will draw out all the toxins and break a fever. Most times, you just need to use it once; sometimes, you need to repeat it once every 24 hours.

ACV Aloe Vera foot bath

ACV and Aloe Vera have antiviral, antibacterial, and fever reducing properties. If you don’t have Aloe Vera, you can use only ACV. I love and recommend this Brand!

Put a cup of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 Tbsp. Aloe Vera Gel in a bowl of room temperature water and soak your feet for 15-20 minutes. Do this every 6 hours until your fever breaks.

You can also give 1/2 Tsp. ACV (every 3 hours) orally, mixed with some juice to your children. Adults can take 1 Tsp every few hours in a glass of water or juice.

Do not give aloe vera orally as it is a strong laxative.

Potato Socks

Like onion slices, you can slice up some potatoes and stuff it into your baby’s socks. Change the potatoes every 5-6 hours. It works really well!

 Ginger Foot Bath

Ginger is amazing for reducing a fever, because it has antibacterial, antiviral properties that reduce a fever by addressing the root cause of the problem. And it makes you sweat a lot, so all the toxins are drawn out of your body when you have a ginger footbath.

1 Tbsp. fresh shredded Ginger

1 Cup hot water

A bowl of room temperature water for a footbath

Pour hot water over shredded ginger, cover it, and let it infuse for 15-20 minutes. Add this water, along with ginger, to your footbath bowl. Soak your legs in this water for 15-20 minutes. Do this once a day until all the symptoms are gone.

Safe for children 1 year and up.

Not safe for pregnant mamas.

Safe for nursing mamas.

GOOT (Garlic Olive Oil Treatment)

GOOT is an herbal remedy that is highly effective against flu! Garlic is a powerful natural antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic herb, so when made into a salve using Coconut and Olive oil, it acts as a powerful germ and virus fighter! Apply a thin layer of olive oil before applying GOOT on small children.

3 Tbsp. Organic Cold Pressed Coconut Oil (I love and recommend this brand)

3 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

2 Tbsp. Freshly chopped raw garlic

Mix everything together (no need to heat anything) and store in an airtight container in your refrigerator. Use it liberally on your feet or your children’s feet at the first sign of flu. Cover the feet with a pair of cotton socks and let it work overnight. You can repeat this every night until all the symptoms go away. If your baby is too small, you can apply a layer of coconut or olive oil and then apply GOOT if you are worried about garlic burning their skin. This salve can also be applied to the chest in case of sever congestion (chest application is only for children 2 years and older and adults).

Shelf life- 1 week. Make a fresh batch every week.

Not recommended for pregnant mamas.

Peppermint Tea

If your child is old enough to drink herbal teas then Peppermint tea is a very effective remedy for treating a fever. Infuse some dried or fresh peppermint in hot water for 10-15 minutes and let the child sip it throughout the day. You can add raw honey to sweeten it.

Do not give honey to babies under 12 months.

Have a Wonderful Week Ahead! 🙂
