5 Natural Remedies For Migraine Headaches
I had promised that I would be posting about the Holistic Medicine Kit today but I am still working on it and it should be ready by tomorrow 🙂
Do you suffer from Migraine Headache? I can feel your pain if you do! My Migraine headache started when I was in high school, thanks to my awesome eating habits! The worst attack was more than 10 years back and I don’t even want to remember it! My Migraine headache is almost non-existent now. Not to say I never get it but I can nip it in the bud every time it tries to show its ugly face. I have been using homeopathy, herbs and oils for Migraine but the frequency drastically came down when I started wearing a Baltic Amber Necklace.
There are lots of things you can do to prevent and treat it (if you happen to get it) with these natural remedies.
Foods to Avoid
Avoid Migraine Triggering Foods like Aged Cheese, Chocolate, Red Wine, Caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, tea, and cola beverages, Foods containing Nitrites, Sulphites used in Dried Fruits (always go for unsulphured dried fruits), Food Additives, Preservatives and Dyes.
Foods That Help:
Magnesium: Magnesium Rich Foods like nuts(not for people with a nut allergy), banana, Dark Leafy Greens, Avocado, Dried Figs (Unsulphured and Organic), Blackstrap Molasses etc. Deficiency of Magnesium often causes Migraine headaches.
Vitamin B2 or Riboflavin: Vitamin B2 deficiency also causes Migraine headaches so make sure you are getting it from food or whole food based supplement. Nuts, meat, eggs, greens are all rich in Vitamin B2.
Make sure you are drinking enough Water because dehydration often triggers Migraine.
Feverfew, Butterbur, Lavender, Peppermint, Kava-Kava are some of the herbs that help with Migraine. You can brew some herbal tea and sip it at the onset of Migraine. Have it throughout the day until your headache subsides.
Just boil a cup of water and add about 1 tbsp of single or mixed dried herbs from the list above. Let it steep for about 15-20 minutes and have. you can add honey to sweeten it if you want.
Lavender and Peppermint oils work wonders on Migraine. You can either mix a few drops of Lavender and Peppermint Essential Oil with a Tsp. of Carrier Oil like Jojoba or Olive and massage the area or put a few drops in the cold water and follow the wet towel method as described above. You can also inhale the oil straight from the bottle. Another way to get some relief from Migraine Headache is to dip a cotton towel in cold water and place it behind the neck for sometime. You can also keep it on the temples or wherever you feel pain. Use Soft Gel Ice Packs if you don‘t want to use the cotton towel dipped in water. You can also wash your head with cold water.
Natural Migraine Headache Relief Balm
You will need:
2 oz (60gms) Shea Butter
1 oz (30gms) Beeswax (Candelilla Wax if you are a Vegan)
1 Tbsp. Jojoba Oil
10 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
10 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil
1 Vitamin E Gel Capsule
Gently melt the Shea Butter and Beeswax in a double boiler. Once they melt add Jojoba Oil and mix well. Let it cool for 5 min. Now add Essential Oils and Vitamin E Oil.
If the balm is too hard you can add more oil and if its too soft you can increase the quantity of Beeswax.
Take Magnesium 30c or Belladonna 30c at the onset of headache. Repeat if necessary. Belladonna is especially helpful for right sided attack, when the face feels hot and red Belladonna never fails.
Natrum Mur 30c works well if the headache is caused by dehydration.
Nux Vomica 30c works for headaches caused by spicy foods or other migraine triggering foods. It also works for headaches caused by lack of sleep, you know that hangover kind of feeling.
Belladonna works well on headaches triggered by extreme heat or especially if its a right sided migraine.
Pulsatilla 30c if its a PMS induced Migraine.
Sepia 30c for Postnatal Headache.
Ruta 30c for a headache triggered by eye strain.
Ipecac 30c for Migraine with Nausea and or Vomiting.
Ignatia 30c for Migraine triggered by Grief, Loss, Disappointment.
Hypericum 30c for all kinds of nervy headaches that make your limbs weak, tingly and numb.
