September is an International Suicide Prevention Awareness Month so I am going to post a few articles on anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression is no joke and if you have never experienced it count yourself lucky! I would say that living with depression is one of the toughest and bravest thing one can ever do! If you are battling anxiety and depression I know exactly how you feel because I have been there once! And that few months made me the strong person that I am today. My heart goes out to all of you wonderful people who are battling hard and are trying to find your way out. All I would like to say is (sounds very cliche but I really mean it)” There is a light at the end of the tunnel” and no you don’t have to live with this scary illness all your life. All you need to do is ask for help! Don’t be in denial and don’t be scared about what others think because they don’t live your life but you do! I will post about my battle with depression in a few days.
There are so many natural remedies for anxiety and depression that works equally well and sometimes even better than the prescription anti-depressants and the best part? Without any nasty side effects. Today I am sharing a very Powerful Tea Recipe for Anxiety and Depression.

2 Tbsp. Ground Cardamom
1/2 Cup Dried Rose Petals (ground) (Buy here)
1/3rd Cup Dried Chamomile (ground)
Raw Honey or any other natural sweetener if you want to sweeten your tea.
Mix all the spices and dried herbs together and store in an airtight glass jar.
How to brew:
Boil 1 and a half cups of water. Add 1 Tbsp. of the mixture and let it boil for 2 minutes. Strain, add your sweetener and have it. You can also let it steep for 10-15 minutes before serving. You can have it 2-3 times a day for severe depression and just 1 cup before bed for mild anxiety and insomnia caused by anxiety.
If you are a Pregnant Mama with depression please use Homeopathy instead of herbs because they are so gentle and safe. Spices listed here are not safe for pregnant mamas (especially in large quantity). Cardamom is ok in small quantity, a few strands of saffron is fine after the 5th month, and Rose petals are fine too but I would suggest using homeopathy for anxiety and depression during pregnancy, will be covering this topic this month so stay tuned if you need some help. This recipe is safe for nursing Mamas.
Benefits of this Herbal Tea
Did you know that Turmeric and Saffron are as effective as Prozac? Yes, there have been several researches done on this and it has been proved that Turmeric and Saffron are 2 Best Natural Antidepressants. Its nothing new in the eastern World because these spices have been used by Ayurvedic Practitioners to treat mental health illnesses for thousands of years.
Some research has even shown that Turmeric is actually more effective than Prozac. Isn’t that amazing? Mother nature has given us everything that we need to heal our mind and body so why depend on something that can give you several nasty side effects. Some research has shown that people who are on anti-depressants are more likely to get recurrent anxiety and panic attacks and it sounds like a flu shot where you get the shot and then deal with the flu within a few days or weeks.
Cardamom is equally helpful in treating anxiety and depression. Cardamom tea is a part of my life, it boosts my mood immediately and I feel so good after drinking it.
Rose can mend a broken heart they say and its very true when it comes to treating depression. It soothes your mind and instills self-love which is the most important aspect in anyone’s life and when you are depressed you tend to neglect yourself, self-care sometimes doesn’t even exist and the World starts to look even more cruel. What we forget is self-love is different from being selfish and no other person can ever love you the way you can love your soul. So make self-love a priority and see once you start to love yourself everyone around you starts to love you too.
Chamomile is a nerve tonic and helps calm your nerves, its good for insomnia too.
St. John’s Wort, Valerian, Kava Kava, Passionflower, Basil, Lavender are few other herbs that are also very powerful anti-depressants, you can add these herbs to your tea if you want. St. John’s Wort interacts with depression medications so don’t use it if you are on meds.
This recipe is for people with mild to moderate depression. If you are suffering from major depression and are on meds then please take Turmeric and Saffron in extract form. 500-1000mg Turmeric and 20-30mg Saffron a day and drink this tea daily. You will have to talk to your doctor if you want to get off your meds, don’t do it abruptly because it is very dangerous.
It is very important to find out the root cause of anxiety and depression rather than treating it with medication so make sure you get your Thyroid, Iron, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3 levels checked. Deficiency in one of these areas might be causing your depression. It could also be because of complex life events like relationship issue or divorce, loss of loved ones, financial stress and even joyful events like Pregnancy and Birth can trigger it.
My friend Ariana has written a beautiful Book called “The Pruned- Blossoming Through Life’s Difficult Seasons“. Its a must read for anyone who is facing difficulties in life, is confused, hopeless or undergoing any change or transformation. She has written it so beautifully!
Hope you see some light soon! Sending Healing Prayers to everyone who is battling anxiety and depression! <3
