 Bust anxiety by sniffing lemon!

As estrogen plunges in your premenstrual week, it makes you prone to worrying, say, about your finances, health or relationship. Luckily, taking a whiff of lemon, mango, lavender, cinnamon or sage can tame tension and mellow your mind in minutes. Credit goes to linalool, a fragrant compound that, when inhaled, induces relaxation by calming activity in dozens of stress-activated genes, according to a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

 Boost brainpower by inhaling rosemary!

Notice your memory is a bit foggier or that you’re suffering a mental slow-down during your premenstrual week? The problem is that as estrogen levels drop, it takes the shine off your thinking skills. To the rescue: Rosemary! Research shows that key compounds in this herb’s aroma sharpens recall and helps you think faster on your feet by blocking the breakdown of certain brain chemicals needed for peak cognitive performance!

 Prevent menstrual cramps with a tummy rub!

Gently rubbing fragrant aromatherapy oil on your abdomen for 15 minutes per day during the week prior to your period can reduce menstrual cramp pain by 50%, according to a study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. And this technique works even if your cramps are severe! It may be because the pleasant aroma and soothing massage reduce stress, which can exacerbate menstrual pain, or that the oils penetrate the skin, reducing inflammation. To prepare the aromatherapy blend used in the study, add two drops of lavender oil, one drop of clary sage oil and one drop of rose oil to 5 cc (about 100 drops) of almond oil base.
